7 Reasons Pilates is not 'Just for Girls'

As a female who has worked in the male-dominated sports medicine industry for the past 7 years I don't generally spend my spare time campaigning the streets for male equality. But on the issue of pilates, I've decided it's time to speak up.

I was talking with a male friend recently, and he began complaining of recurrent hamstring tears at footy and a chronically achey lower back. He claimed he'd tried physio, osteo, chiro and even yoga, all with only short-term relief. 'Come try Clinical pilates' I emphatically exclaimed! To which he responded 'I'd rather share my lunch with Trump than prance around in a leotard'.

And suddenly it dawned on me: these men think pilates is actually ballet! So it's time to set the record straight with the top 7 reasons why Pilates is a highly respectable and beneficial activity for men, women and everyone in between.

1) Pilates was invented by a man (Joseph Pilates) during the First World War in order to rehabilitate injured soldiers.

2) It was then adapted to 'Clinical Pilates' (the use of pilates by physiotherapists and other health professionals) by a male physiotherapist in order to use it to specifically strengthen/mobilize/rehabilitate patients.

3) Clinical Pilates is used following injuries, to prevent injuries and for general improvement of biomechanics (problems surprisingly not unique to the female population).

4) Pilates is now one of the key forms of exercise for most of our top athletes including: NFL, AFL, Tennis, Golf, Swimming and Running.

5) There is absolutely no requirement to wear anything made of Lycra or to fill your wardrobe with the latest active wear. Shorts and a t-shirt will suffice.

6) Learning more about how to correctly move your body and activate the right muscles with a Physio during pilates will allow you to get back to the things you love (lifting heavy things, throwing balls and going topless at the beach).

7) Every single human deserves to be their healthiest, happiest self. If Pilates is what your body needs right now, who really cares if your mates think you've taken up dancing classes?
